The pressure to succeed can be overwhelming, especially for entrepreneurs. There’s always the pressure to make more money, to grow your business, to achieve your goals. But what if there was another way to measure success? What if instead of focusing on profits, you focused on your passions? Prioritizing your passions over profits may seem like a risky move, but it’s actually one of the smartest things you can do for yourself, and your business.
I have more recently really focused in on the question “does this spark joy?” as the main question behind most of my decision making. I have always had a similar mindset, but it especially started to resonate with me over the past few years, especially throughout the pandemic. We all watched a lot of lives get cut short and regardless of your political views, I think we can all agree that it was still a terrible thing to watch other families, if not your own family, go through. Life is too short to deal with anything that does not bring you joy, do you really want the end of your life to come and for you to have regret upon regret?
I (rach) personally did not go to a 4 year college. I got out of high school and had literally ZERO clue what I wanted to do with my life. I watched 90% of my high school classmates talk about how they were going to major in *x* because it would pay them like crazy. They didn’t care what the job was, they just wanted the express route to profit. When all of my friends went off to college and I was practically the only one left still living in my hometown, I felt so left out. Did I make the wrong decision? Should I have followed what they said and just picked a major at an away college that would get me a high paying job?
As time went on, I let go of this thought and decided to just listen to my gut and just wait to go back until I found exactly what I wanted to do for a career. You are still so young when you get out of high school, its crazy that you are faced with such a life-determining decision at such a young age. You can’t drink alcohol but you can put yourself into debt for the rest of your life?? Okkaaayyyyyy then
Now, I see a huuuge percentage of my old classmates that have jobs having NOTHING to do with what they majored in! They spent all of that money, just to not even do anything with it? It honestly breaks my heart to see how many people fall into the terribly broken school system, but that is a story for another day! There are 100% majors that can almost guarantee you jobs, and guarantee that it will be worth the investment. However, there was a study done that showed approximately 53.2 million former students saying they’re unsure about the value of their degree.
Now, not only do some people get stuck doing something having nothing to do with their degree, but some get stuck in a job that makes them utterly miserable. Regardless of what you went to school for, even if you went and got a degree that you can’t get a job in, there are still an uncountable amount of jobs that you could do that would just require you to teach yourself some new skills.
I have never understood why, in a world of endless opportunities, some choose to work a job that makes them dread every day. A lot of people may say, “it pays the bills” but quite frankly, that just isn’t good enough for me! It may pay the bills, but what it’s really costing you is your happiness. I have found that so many people get trapped in the cycle of trying to climb the corporate ladder, in order for other people to look at their jobs and see success. The higher up you climb in the corporate world, the more successful you are right?? WRONGGGGG
Since the first day I decided to start my photography business, the answer to that question every single day has been a strong “hell YEAH it sparks joy”. No matter how difficult, overwhelming, or frustrating the days can get, I always end each day with a core of excitement and gratefulness that I have pursued this passion instead of just searching for a job based on the pay. THAT is how I know I am meant for this.
While it may not be even remotely close to easy starting your own business, it is beyond worth every single difficult step you take. Not only do you get to create work out of a passion, but YOU are in charge. YOU make the decisions. And while that type of role is not for everyone, so many people with the potential for it still get stuck in a job they hate – dreaming of retirement. At that point, you’ve already worked your whole life in jobs you absolutely hated. Don’t let the status quo of ‘needing to be in a corporate job to be successful’ hold you back from reaching your highest potential!!
Ask yourself today and every day, “does this spark joy?” and if the answer is no, it may be time to start thinking of some alternatives. Always put passions before profit, and if you work hard enough at that passion, the profit will follow naturally.
If you resonated with this even a little bit, then you have the potential. You can do it, and I’m here to be your cheerleader every step of the way!!
