Writing your vows can be a challenging task, but it can also be a beautiful and meaningful experience. As long as you follow these tips, writing your vows will be a stress free and heartwarming experience! If you’re feeling overwhelmed about the wedding planning process as a whole, we can help with that too!
Start Early Do not, and I repeat DO NOTTT wait until the night or two before your wedding to start writing your vows. Your vows should be written over the months leading up to your wedding. A great idea is to keep a running note in your phone of vow related thoughts. For example, you guys just had a really great date night and your feeling super mushy – that is a great time to jot down a few thoughts you’re having!
Get Personal (but not too personal lol) Make your vows about you and your partner. Think about what makes your relationship unique and what you love about your partner. To an extent, you should take this time to act like there is no one else there. You are just taking those few minutes to pour out your love and promises to your partner.
Be Specific Instead of making general statements like “I love you and can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you” (its okay to say some general things, just try and mainly keep it specific! Vows are promises, not just statements). Try to be specific about your love and commitment. Mention specific experiences or events that have brought you closer together.
Feel Free To Include Some Humor! If humor is a big part of your relationship, don’t be afraid to include a few jokes or lighthearted moments when writing your vows! Your vows aren’t the time to go in on joking the whole time, but throwing a few jokes or silly stories here and there is a great way to break up those sappy ass tears you will be crying throughout the rest of the vows!
Be Prepared Practice reading your vows in front of a mirror or with a close friend to get comfortable with the words. It may feel silly, but practicing them will make a big difference. Day of, you will already have some jitters and nerves, and your vows are what I would consider to be one of the, if not the most important part of the day. Read over them as much as possible to get yourself confident with reading them!
Keep it short and sweet Getting the writing started is the hard part – but once you start writing it may be hard to stop. My best advice would be to make a bulleted list of the points you want to hit and then fill it in from there. Try to keep it between 3-5 minutes, that is the sweet spot of not too long but not too short!
Write From The Heart Above all, the most important tip is to let your vows come from your heart. Write what you truly feel and be sincere in your promises to each other. Don’t just google vow examples and copy a bunch of those, these need to come directly from you!
By following these tips, you can create vows that are meaningful, personal, and truly reflective of your love and commitment to each other. Every single tip in this list is so so important, but the most important in my opinion is to GIVE YOURSELF TIME. If you’re reading this, that probably means youve got a few months until your big day. Start writing those vows now to ensure that they are well thought out, rehearsed, and straight from your heart!
